If you have been over to the Orange Show Monument within the past two years you might have noticed some pretty interesting things happening next door at Smither Park. Each Saturday, artists from across the city and state decend upon the park to create beautiful, three-dimentional handmade mosaics, spanning across a 400-foot wall. This is just the first step in what is destined to be an enormous cultural asset within Houston's East End.
We've been quietly raising money to complete Smither Park over the past couple years, but now it's your turn to get involved and show your support! Starting today and going through Friday November 2nd we are raising money through Kickstarter to build a set of swings within the park - swings that will provide fun and smiles for children and adults alike for many years to come.
The Swings at Smither Park will be a magical place where kids of all ages can come to relax, reflect, and let the wind rush through their hair. The structure of the swings will be 12-15 feet tall, and will be covered in intricate mosaic work done by local artists.
We think you probably still have some questions...
But what is Smither Park?
Smither Park is Houston's first folk art inspired green space, situated on a half-acre adjacent to the Orange Show Monument. It's the brainchild of Orange Show board member and avid folk art collector Stephanie Smither, as a tribute to her late husband John. Together with her friend and world-renowned visionary designer Dan Phillips they came up with the design of the park and recruited the builders and artists to help bring it to life.
The park will feature different structures including a grotto, interactive tower, tunnel and swings - each embellished from top to bottom with elaborate, hand-adorned mosaic work made completely out of found, reused and recycled objects.
