Smither Park Call for Entries
MIKELL K. JOHNSON PIANO
Deadline for Submission: January 15, 2017
Email all required proposal materials to: Dan Phillips - firstname.lastname@example.org
Commission Project: The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art and Smither Park desire to commission an artist to embellish a Yamaha Clavinova Digital Upright Piano. The piano will be located in the Lindley Fish Amphitheatre, an area for public and private events including film, dance, performances, weddings, and more. The piano will be available for park visitors to sit and play -- but it also plays itself – providing a stunning visual as well as musical addition to Smither Park. This request for proposal is open to all artists/artist teams, residing in the state of Texas with experience in the design, fabrication, and installation of mosaic artworks.
Context: As a project of The Orange Show Center for Visionary Arts, Smither Park is intended to be “folk art” or “outsider art” friendly. All artists involved with the park are not allowed to pull ideas from inventory, copy anyone else, or otherwise create works that are not in the spirit of visionary art. Since The Orange Show for Visionary Arts is a publicly supported entity, political, sexual, religious, or other personal agendas are not allowed in the design of projects. It is a family park, and therefore, must be family friendly as well. While nudes are allowed, for instance, they must be so abstracted that they will not become offensive to even the most conservative of park visitors. Words are allowed, but only sporadically, and one at a time. You will be working with Dan Phillips, artistic director for the park. If you have a question, he is a phone call away: 936-581-5028.
Design Theme: Consideration may be given to imagery inspired by New Orleans and/or music
Materials: Designs must not include wood, plastic, fabric or anything sharp. All materials including adhesive and grout, fabrication as well as insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation, etc. at the expense of the artist through the commissioning fee. Work to be performed onsite.
Selection Criteria: Artists will be selected by a panel of jurors based on examples of past work and the strength of their proposal for new work to be created. Panelists decision final once ratified by OSCVA Executive Committee.
1. Maximum 1,000 word exhibition proposal describing the work and imagery that you propose
