Event Details:

Houston's performance art collective, Continuum, will present a multi-faceted performance art experience entitled KALI, names after the goddess of change and destruction. It will explore the painfully destructive nature of passion that inevitably evokes change.

The show will feature participatory and durational performances by multiple artists, playing off the unique spaces and stages of the Orange Show. This will be a visually, mentally and sensually engaging experience, aimed at giving participants a truly unique emotional adventure in anticipation of Valentine's Day.

Artist Performances:

Daniel-Kayne and John Pitale's band Cosmic Waves present "The Seduction of Mithras," a performance that takes us through a journey of sounds representing a story of seduction, jealousy and love. Mithras the Persian Sun God is seduced by a beautiful warrior who is in the service of the King of Persia, his lover. The sound piece employs gongs, chimes, drums and audience participation.

In "Unvelieved", a performance exploring self-acceptance and gender through self-love, Koomah embodies a depressed bride who repeatedly hurts herself in creative ways, culminating in a dramatic transition into a happy groom through an injection of testosterone.

In Joy Moore's "All's Fair," a carnival-influenced game, couples (or friends) are given the opportunity to be rewarded by either protecting the one they adore or getting revenge for pain caused by the partner. Will the night end in disharmony or deeper love?

Julia Wallace follows the arc of a love affair in a self-guided adventure for couples. The adventure consists of a variety of activities and actions that will have the couple exploring the venue and exploring each other. The result will be an experience like no other and a relationship that is forever changed.

In "The Wrath of Kali," Continuum members deconstruct marriage, family life and identity by playing wedding videos overlayed with a a soundscape made with found objects and pre-recorded tracks. Performers will then circulate through the audience, doing interactive performances as they go. Finally, performers will score and chastise Raindawg, and then welcome him into a new identity.

Tina McPherson discusses and spreads love by attempting to compose the Longest Love Poem, inviting the audience to write romantic expressions on canvas from her lovely dress.

In "A Realistic Pledge," Sway Youngston reinvents romantic commitments and provides couples a realistic alternative to marriage.

Y.E. Torres strips off clothing to share with us a narration of her tattoos that signify past and current loves.

In "Viscosity," a durational performance addressing the complexity of relationship drama, Jonatan Lopez attempts to untangle piles of electrical cords with the aid of several lubricating fluids.

And as icing on the cake, Stephanie Saint Sanchez aka DJ ESTEFF will provide a heartbreaking soundtrack for the dance floor and showcase her new Valentine Musik Video: Everybody Loves Me Baby.

About Continuum:

Continuum is a group of performance artists that came together in a performance art workshop facilitated by Julia Wallace in March and April of 2011 at The Jenner House. Through the four-week interactive experience they discovered ways of creating powerful performances through collaboration, participation, experimentation, documentation and encouraging feedback. They are connected in the desire to help and encourage each other's self-discovery through performancy, as well as a desire to give the gift of performative expression to others. Right brain and left brain; are they really opposites or two different sides of the same coin? We'll visit examples of the way artists visualize science, and scientists create art. We'll take behind-the-scenes tours of high-tech installations and architecture in our leading centers of learning, research and healthcare. We'll explore examples of how art is used to humanize science. And we'll meet artists and scientists who unite these two traits and in so doing, make Houston a cutting edge center of both. No, it's not an April Fool's joke!

Tickets are $40 for members and $60 for non-members. Includes transportation on a luxury coach, with drinks and snacks along the way.

Get in the Halloween spirit this Friday as The Orange Show presents "Gypsy Swamp Showcase" featuring live music, improvisational dance, visual artistry, and a freaky and sensual celebration of the Day of the Dead. Ghastly body paint, harrowing baptisms, and a whole lot of Voodoo are in store for all that come!

Led by one of Houston's best and most diverse musicians, Hilary Sloan combines dark and wild gypsy violin virtuosity with powerful vocal improvisation. The Houston Chronicle recently commented on her work, saying "Sloan has a gift for expressing waves of emotion via a simple line, a vocal lift, a slide across her fiddle. Her records, even her live performances, are studies in economic artistry."

Accompanying Sloan in Friday's performance will be other local musical virtuosos Jo Bird (of Two Star Symphony), Jeremy Nuncio (of Tyagaraja), and Thomas Helton.

In addition, Gypsy Swamp will feature Houston belly-dancer and performance artist Y.E. Torres, as the Bad Unicorn, "an inbred Unicorn... she was known for her dark and perverse images as well as her grotesque erotic themes." Other acts will include Erin Joyce, Emily Sloan, Ashley MacLean, Jenny Nuzzo, Mandy Trichell, Brittany Wallis and Jacquelyn Boa.

COSTUMES ENCOURAGED!

Doors open at 7:30, Show starts at 8pm.

Two Star Symphony presents "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" at The Orange Show

Join us this Saturday for an evening of mystery and suspense as Houston's own Two Star Symphony performs their original score to the 1920 cult horror classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The group has performed this at venues across the city including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and Diverseworks, and now they are bringing this masterpiece to The Orange Show!

If you've never seen The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari before, this is the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season and experience something weird and wonderful.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari plot synopsis by Hal Erickson of All-Movie Guide:

In one of the most influential films of the silent era, Werner Krauss plays Caligari, a sinister hypnotist who travels the carnival circuit displaying a somnambulist names Cesare (Conrad Veidt).

In one tiny German town, a series of murders coincides with Caligari's visit. When the best friend of hero Francis (Friedrich Feher) is killed, the deed seems to be the outgrowth of a romantic rivalry over the hand of the lovely Jane (Li Dagover). Francis suspects Caligari, but he is ignored by the police. Investigating on his own, Francis seeminly discovers that Caligari has been ordering the somnambulist to commit the murders, but the story eventually takes a more surprising direction.

Caligari's Expressionist style ultimately led to the dark sharows and deep angles of the film noir urban crime dramas of the 1940s, many of which were directed by such German emigres as Billy Wilder and Robert Siodmak.

30 More Volunteers Needed for Bayou City Art Festival

We're so close to filling our commitment and are looking for 30 more awesome volunteers to join The Orange Show's crew at the Bayou City Art Festival, taking place October 8th & 9th! If we reach our target number of volunteers, then Bayou City Art Festival will provide us with a substantial donation! So, by donating your time you're actually giving us money!

There are a number of different ways you can volunteer - and as a perk you'll receive free admission to the fair for that day as well as a free t-shirt! Check out the different ways you can help out below.

Shift Schedule

The festival runs Saturday October 8th and Sunday October 9th, 2011. Each day is divided into the following shifts:

Saturday October 8, 2011
Shift 1 - 9:00am - 1:00pm
Shift 2 - 12:00pm - 4:00pm
Shift 3 - 2:30pm - 6:30pm

Sunday October 9, 2011
Shift 1 - 8:30am - 1:00pm *shift begins 1/2 hour earlier due to accessibility hour
Shift 2 - 12:00pm - 4:00pm
Shift 3 - 2:30pm - 6:30pm

*Anyone wishing to volunteer for more than one shift is welcome to do so. However, you MUST remember to sign-in for each shift that you work. We ask that volunteers report 15 minutes early for their scheduled shift(s).

Volunteer Activities

Creative Zone
Join The Orange Show in the Creative Zone! We'll be helping kids and families create their very own mini art cars!

Ticket Taker
Take admission tickets from patrons at the entrance gate. You will be given pocketed smocks and a box to place collected tickets. This position has exposure to direct sunlight. Please remember to bring a hat and sunscreen!

Greeters
Volunteers greet and hand out festival maps as patrons enter the gate. This position has exposure to direct sunlight. Please remember to bring a hat and sunscreen!

Artist Relief
Provide relief to artists, eg - hand out beverages, snacks, booth sit (when applicable).

Festival Market Booth
You will be selling festival t-shirts, posters and hats. Some basic training will be given at beginning of shift.

Coupon Booth
You will be selling food and drink coupons to patrons. This is fun and fast-paced!

Patron Art Pick-Up
Volunteers will monitor artwork being held after purchase and assist with loading artwork into patron's vehicle. You must be 21 years or older to work this position.

VIP Lounge
Monitor VIP area, check guest wristbands, assist with food and drink service.

Stage Runner
Assist with performance and performers at the Houston Arts Alliance Stage.

Volunteer Relief
Monitor volunteers throughout the festival and ensure they have relief, water, etc. as needed.

Please note: Bayou City Art Festival reserves the right to assign volunteers to the area of greatest need at the time of volunteer check-in. Volunteers may also be moved to a different assignment during their shift depending on areas of need.

25th Anniversary of The Orange Show Eyeopener Tours!

What started as a group of art adventurers trying to out-discover and out-entertain each other in 1986 has turned into the award-winning Eyeopener Tour series. Over 15,000 guests have toured visionary folk art environments and collections that make you stop, look and look again. The folks at Texas Monthly were so impressed that they included the Eyeopener Tours in their list of "The Top 50 Things All Texans Should Do", and The City of Houston promotional materials often list it as one of "The Top Thing To Do In Houston."

On Sunday September 25, you'll have an opportunity to go back to where it all began and revisit some of the city's most unique and unexpected places! Join us for an afternoon of fantastic sightings and beauty in strange places, including the recently restored and 30-year old Orange Show Monument, Cleveland "the Flower Man" Turner - one of Houston's most colorful personalities, the beloved Beer Can House, and other some jaw-dropping surprises. Construction has begun on Houston's newest art park, and it's right here at the Orange Show! Smither Park is well on it's way to becoming a reality, and we need your help. You can contribute to this fun green space by providing odds & ends to embellish the park structures.

Some suggestions of items we can use:

Tiles - colored or patterned

Sea shells
Interesting metal objects such as drawer pulls and door knobs

Preserving Outsider Art at the Orange Show and Beer Can House

The happy colors and flaking paint. He ponders that. I ask him why it closed. La economia. Satisfied, he heads on up the road.

And when the sun does shine, it is powerfully crystalline, illuminating all the facets of the place where anything goes. It’s the nation’s largest city without a zoning code, so you get a nightclub next to a scrap yard, a church next to a check-cashing establishment, a six-story building next to a one-story. Above-ground archeology if you will—with all the layers intermingled.

“If juxtaposition and discontinuity may be said to characterize evolving cities such as Houston, in no area are they so dramatic and intensified than in this one,” notes Houston: An Architectural Guide. Some parts date to the very beginnings of the city, others point to what’s yet to come.

Telephone Road, where I’ve got my camera poised, was once home of the wildcatters and the honky tonks, lined with metal enamel billboards for Grand Prize Beer. Now, next to what’s left, the signs say “su palabra es su credito” (your word is your credit) or “compre aqui, pague aqui” (compare here, buy here), in a piñata palette that dazzles the eye. Nuzzled in between are the likes of Gigi’s Party Rentals, a weathered survivor of the ’50s, and Bodhi’s Zen Garden and Veggie, its day already done.

Marketing director Stephen Bridges tells me, half in jest, that all of Houston is only a backdrop for the Orange Show. He has a point. Mexicali colors. Check. Anything goes. Check. Quirky context. Check. Just a few miles east of downtown’s looming skyscrapers—wedged between run-down asbestos-sided houses and a freight company, freeway abuzz a block away—resides the key to life. Indeed, just a quick visit, writes Joseph Lomax in Folk Art in Texas, “willmore than convince anyone that within the pithy orange rind lie the secrets of health, longevity, and happiness.”

But before the convincing sets in, you have to take a breath, because you’re flat-out agog. The product of postal worker Jeff McKissack—its architect, mason, welder, carpenter, engineer, tilesetter, and general mastermind—the Orange Show gives going postal a whole new twist. “Once inside you think you’re seeing the impossible, carefully, even lovingly engineered to become felicitously possible,” says art critic Ann Holmes. “It probably doesn’t really threaten the laws of Newton, it just seems to.”

Ventilators whizzing, wind vanes gyrating, flags cracking—the Gulf breeze animates the place even before you set foot inside. From out front it’s a pint-size Alamo, surrounded by a white wall, with a pair of stone lions to guard the entrance. Through a turnstile, you enter into a labyrinth of pretzel-twist staircases, up, down, and around a seemingly unending series of improbable attractions. An oasis festooned with plastic orange tree limbs. Small fountains with frogs spouting water. A wishing well. A diorama on all the good chemicals you get from eating an orange. A diorama with diminutive dinosaurs. Two steam engines—one posing as a tractor that powers a boat round and round a pocket-size stadium. All intersected by a maze of passageways. And I’m just getting started. Luckily I’ve made it to an observation deck where I can take a break in one of the tutti-frutti-painted metal tractor seats. Rows of tutti-frutti-painted metal tractor seats. One wasn’t enough. One wasn’t enough either when it came to wagon-wheel balconies, in eye-popping jelly-bean colors.

From rockets to rodeos, an array of attractions

Deep in the heart of Texas, 32,000 federal employees give their all in the service of their nation.

They heal the sick and reach for the stars. Houston's biggest federal employers include the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center and NASA Johnson Space Center, each with about 3,500 employees. The city will take on further federal activity when the Government Procurement Connections conference — connecting government agencies, corporations and small businesses — rolls into town April 6-7.

Houston comes with its own tagline, thanks to the Apollo 13 crew: "Houston, we've had a problem." • Our specific problem? So little time, so much to do here. Houston is home to more than 200 institutions devoted to the arts, science and history.

Space Center Houston is one of the city's top attractions. A tram tour offers a glimpse behind the scenes of NASA's Johnson Space Center, whose highlights include the historic mission control center, the Saturn V complex at Rocket Park and the space vehicle mock-up facility. The Living in Space module introduces visitors to the rigors of life beyond the atmosphere. Try eating and showering in minimal gravity. The starship gallery shows off an early space capsule, a lunar rover and a giant Skylab trainer, among other goodies.

For something on a smaller scale, and in an artistic vein, the Menil Collection offers an intimate environment in which to view a range of creative works, from prehistoric representations to surrealist works by Salvador Dali and Max Ernst. Melting clocks notwithstanding, these may still be considered mainstream works.

Yet Houston has its share of oddball wonders, too, led by heavy hitter the Orange Show. Postal worker Jeff McKissack worked on it from 1956 until his death in 1980, crafting a 3,000-square-foot homage to his preferred citrus. The meandering maze incorporates a wishing well, a pond, wagon wheels, tractor seats and mannequins. Come in the spring and you can be part of the annual Easter Orange Hunt. Bring a basket.

Just as the Orange Show gives a nod to Florida's finest, so does the Beer Can House toast Milwaukee, Munich and all the great places where hops are joyfully fermented.

The house is a living celebration of suds, a folk art gallery and workshop adorned with more than 50,000 beer cans. Apparently, a former owner had a tendency to hoard, and after filling the attic and the garage, he decided to put his empties to use as domestic adornment.

At some point, Houston got a head start on the trendy "eat local" movement. Its farmers' markets boast character, creativity and, of course, outstanding produce. Canino Produce has grown from 3,800 to more than 20,000 square feet since opening its doors in 1958. Restaurant buyers and everyday shoppers rub elbows amid a wealth of local vegetables and specialty items. Central City Co-Op keeps prices down by buying in bulk for its members. Visitors can purchase a day pass.

Houston institutions tell a lot of lesser-known stories, beyond the rocket ships. Take, for instance, the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy of the African-American soldier. With a vast repository of artifacts, the museum celebrates this little-known chapter through documents, videos and a broad range of historical memorabilia.

The modest storefront of Casa Ramirez Folk Art Gallery belies the treasures within. The gallery exhibits and sells a diverse array of Mexican craftwork, from religious icons to brightly painted skulls celebrating the Day of the Dead. Wood carvings, metal sculptures and accomplished portraits all have a place on the walls and shelves.

Along the same lines, the American Cowboy Museum comes as a surprise, being more Tonto than Lone Ranger. Located on a working ranch, the museum celebrates the multicultural aspects of the Old West. Exhibits place a special emphasis on the role of blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and women. Visitors can take part in tours and hands-on activities.

At the end of a long, hot day, Houston offers plenty of places to cool off.

Poison Girl clientele pour in from across the social spectrum, bumping elbows at this dive bar. They come for the cheap drinks and good company, the jukebox, the pinball machine and the lazy luxury of the picnic tables on the outdoor patio.

Need another bar? Try 300 Houston, a luxury bowling emporium. The upscale alley features flat-screen TVs, a VIP cocktail lounge and a kickin' stereo system. Personal servers bring food and drink right to your lane.

Absolve Wine Lounge complements its spectacular list of some 150 wines with tasty contemporary snacks like pomodoro meatballs and Italian quesadillas.

While Houston's is a story of life and vibrancy, we'll conclude on the opposite end of the spectrum: The National Museum of Funeral History describes the diverse traditions of internment over time, displaying historic hearses and memorabilia from memorable sending-offs. Museum motto: "Any Day Above Ground is a Good One."

It's festival time again, and we love the Memorial Park Bayou City Art Festival most of all! The Orange Show is again a participating Non-Profit Partner, and we're looking to fill a large number of the volunteer shifts that help this wonderful festival run so smoothly. Opportunities range from Helping Kids Make Mini Art Cars in the Creative Zone to Ticket-Taker, Merchandise Booth, Stage Runner, etc. Something for everyone!

Volunteers receive a free commemorative t-shirt and free admission to the festival for the entire day of their shift. Shifts are four hours and generally run from 9am-1pm, 12-4pm and 2:30-6:30pm on all three days, March 25 through 27. Your participation helps support the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art and is also lots of fun.

Greater Houston Area Museums Art Car

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 12pm Tuesday, February 22, 2011

The 2011 American Association of Museums (AAM) Annual Meeting & MuseumExpo Local Host Committee, in partnership with the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art and the Houston Arts Alliance, requests proposals from artists and artist teams for an Art Car design representing the Greater Houston Area Museums for the 2011 Art Car Parade on Sunday, May 22, 2011.

The Art Car Parade marks the opening event for the AAM Annual Meeting, which brings 5,000-6,000 regional, national, and international museum curators, practitioners and visionaries from more than 50 countries. Following the parade, the Houston Area Museums Art Car will be displayed at the George R. Brown Convention Center during the AAM conference, May 22-25, 2011.

Project Objectives

Utilize objects and materials provided by museums in the Greater Houston Area to create a design that showcases the quality and diversity of our museum community.
Reflect the spirit of the Art Car tradition while revealing Greater Houston’s vibrancy as a creative generator.
Use of materials that can withstand unexpected weather conditions.
Artist(s) must be available to work within an accelerated timeline and provide their own workspace

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to artists working in all media.

Budget

$4,000 awarded in increments, inclusive of design, materials and fabrication. The vehicle will be provided free of charge courtesy of the Orange Show, most likely a limousine or a station wagon.

March 2011 - Contract executed, fabrication initiated

Representatives from AAM 2011 Public Arts & Programming Subcommittee’s Art Car Task Force and the AAM 2011 Local Conference Coordinator will review eligible submissions and recommend one finalist and one alternate to be interviewed the week of February 21, 2011.

A Monumental Work of Handmade Architecture The Orange Show is a folk-art environment - a monumental work of handmade architecture - located in Houston's East End. It was built single handedly from 1956 until its completion in 1979, by the late Jefferson Davis McKissack, a Houston postal worker. The Beer Can House in Houston, TX

Ripley's Believe It or Not estimated that over 50,000 cans adorn this monument to recycling. John Milkovisch, a retired upholsterer for the Southern Pacific Railroad, started his project now known as the Beer Can House in 1968 when he began inlaying thousands of marbles, rocks, and metal pieces into concrete and redwood to form unique landscaping features. When the entire front and back yard were completely covered because he got sick of mowing the grass, he turned to the house itself and began adding aluminum siding - aluminum beer can siding, that is. Over the next 18 years the house disappeared under a cover of flattened beer cans for both practical and decorative reasons. Garlands made of cut beer cans hanging from the roof edges not only made the house sing in the wind, but also lowered the family's energy bills. We have assembled an impressive panel of judges. They will make their decisions based on theme, craftsmanship, design and originality. Official judging takes place the morning of the parade from 9:00am—11:30 am and final judging occurs during the parade. The judging categories are as follows:

Best Entry by Youth Group—entry created by 4 or more under age 18.

All winners receive a one of a kind handmade trophy created during our multiple trophy-making workshops throughout the Art Car Season.

VIPit Party - THE place to be on Parade Day

The official party of the Houston Art Car Parade, VIPit offers the absolute best views and features a deluxe picnic lunch from some of Houston’s best restaurants. Shaded bleacher seating, fun family activities, gift bags and live entertainment make VIPit THE place to be on parade day.

Individual tickets are $125.
Tickets for children under 12 are $15.
Art Car Angel Packages for 10 are available for $1,250
Art Car STAR Packages for 25 are available for $4,000

Art Car Entry Awards

We have assembled an impressive panel of judges. They will make their decisions based on theme, craftsmanship, design and originality. Official judging takes place the morning of the parade from 9:00am—11:30 am and final judging occurs during the parade. The judging categories are as follows:
