In an immersive musical experience, Houston-based composer Robert McClure and the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art present an evening concert that challenges the audience to slow down and listen. McClure will present three pieces that celebrate the Orange Show’s unique space and Houston’s natural soundscape. The evening will feature performances from University of Houston Faculty Artist in Saxophone, Dan Gelok, percussionist Andrew Keller, and musicians from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.
McClure’s works demonstrate a synthesis of space and structure, concept and design, process and emotion. The piece “untangle my tongue” for electronic playback juxtaposes sounds recorded in Houston (cicadas, cars, the METRORail) with poems by collaborator Anne Shaw that questions the pace of our current lifestyle.
“in Steel” for saxophone and percussion bends and twists its musical material mirroring the Orange Show’s construction. And “Music Box 9,” a new work written specifically for the Orange Show, will be given its world premier. This large ensemble work will feature nine separate combinations of musicians scattered throughout the space. Listeners personally experience unique versions of the piece as they casually walk through the space, untangling the strands of juxtaposed material in a musical maze.
